OUR VISION FOR SPORT

Sport England carried out research into children's attitudes towards physical activity and sport. The research looked at the elements of physical literacy:

  • enjoyment
  • confidence
  • competence
  • understanding
  • knowledge

In summary, the key findings are: 

  1. The more elements of physical literacy children have, the more active they are.
  2. Enjoyment is the biggest driver of activity levels. 
  3. Children with all five elements report higher levels of happiness and resilience. 
  4. Activity levels drop when children reach their teenage years.
  5. The results reveal inequalities among certain groups of children:
  • Girls are less likely to say they enjoy or feel confident about doing sport and physical activity. Among children aged 5-7, boys are more likely to love playing sport, while girls are more likely to love being active.
  • Children from the least affluent families are less likely to enjoy activity than those from the most affluent families, and previous research shows they are also far less likely to be active.
  • Black children are more physically literate than other ethnic groups – driven by boys, but they're less active than the population as a whole.

Our vision for sport at Magna Carta is to maximise levels of participation in physical activity. The findings in the above report do not have to apply to our pupils and our community. We don't need to let them apply. That is why we ensure all our extracurricular sports clubs are free to parents. We do not want money to be the reason some children miss out. We use the PE and Sport Premium to pay for sports coaches to enthuse and motivate our pupils. We are proud that huge numbers of pupils sign up to sports clubs outside of school hours, and we are proud that huge numbers of our parents and families value the benefits which participation in sport can bring. We introduce our pupils to a range of sports, through assemblies, taster sessions and through the taught PE curriculum. We encourage competition, first and foremost between a child and themselves- can they beat their personal best? 


PURPOSE OF THE FUNDING:

Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. 

POSSIBLE USES OF THE FUNDING INCLUDE:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits
