School community launches hobby clubs

Posted: 24th June 2019

Traditional past-times of knitting and playing chess are being taught to modern school children.

Members of the community around Magna Carta Primary Academy are coming forward with offers of sharing their hobbies with pupils.

A Knit and Natter after-school club and a lunchtime chess club have both been launched, giving children an opportunity to learn from their neighbours.

Headteacher Marios Solomonides said: “I feel that knitting is an important skill, but we do not have that skill among our team. So, I got in touch with the church to ask if they knew of anyone who would like to come and knit with our children. They have gone one step further and raised the money needed and provided all the materials needed.

“The chess group came about through the association of residents in the road near the school. A neighbour who is a retired teacher was keen to teach our young people to play chess. I think it is such a good game as it teaches logic and so many other skills.

“It is just lovely that members of the community want to help in this way.”

Another neighbour donated several chess sets to the school for the club.
